It looks like the prize of Peterborough’s Best Burger has finally been won – before the “winner” has even opened their new restaurant!

hassling nagging Handmade Burger Co. on twitter and email, even going as far as selling Peterborough to their openings team, it’s finally happening and we’re finally getting a gourmet burger restaurant in the City. The Fitzwilliam Arms had a refurbishment towards the end of 2010 and the result is a lovely cosy pub. The menu’s are typical Vintage Inns (although it’s worth noting the slight price differences between the Fitzwilliam Arms and the Cuckoo – another Vintage Inns pub in Peterborough).
We visited one lunchtime just before Christmas and the pub was pretty full. We found a table in one of the snugs to the side of the bar and read through the menus. The humble burger has been a subject of discussion for some in Peterborough for a few years, namely due to a particular burger van in the city’s Cathedral Square. That got me thinking about where I would go for a real gourmet burger – one that isn’t served with a waxy napkin and is more likely to contain a slice of beef tomato than a mound of fried onions.
The demand for burgers in Peterborough is obvious to see – there are eight McDonalds restaurants in and around the city limits, plus numerous other chains and takeaways offering pretty much the same. Other towns and cities have attracted the likes of Gourmet Burger Kitchen or Ultimate Burger, so where can you go in Peterborough to get a better burger?
