Review: Tea for two at Holmewood Hall

Guest review by Tia

Set in 14 acres of landscaped gardens and once an opulent home to the Wells family, Holmewood Hall is located in a leafy village of Holm which is south of Yaxley and also accessible east of the A1, south of Peterborough.? Already a premier conference venue, they have recently opened their doors to offer afternoon tea.

Holmewood HallThe Hall is located down a single track driveway which meanders through an avenue of trees and opens out into a large car park directly in front of the building. IMG_7496On arrival you are greeted with an impressive entrance with double doors complete with a pair of impressive (but cheeky) looking door guards.

We were warmly welcomed by Sarah who showed us into the Old Billiard room which is to the side of the building with lovely views over-looking the gardens and grounds.

There were around 4 large conference sized tables and some were already set up for afternoon tea with a charming selection of miss-matched china and cutlery.? As we took our seats, we were greeted by a member of the waiting team who took our tea order. Within minutes our pot of tea arrived, following shortly by our huge selection of food.

Vintage afternoon tea

Holmewood Hall Cream TeaThere was a good variety of sandwiches on offer.? There were about 3 rounds comprising of ham and cucumber, egg mayonnaise and prawn mayonnaise.? Two very plump fruity scones were accompanied by two generous individual tubs of Rhoddas Clotted Cornish cream and strawberry jam.? We were also given a plate on which nestled four very generous slices of cakes.? They were home-made Victoria sponge and Carrot cake. The sponge was soft and fluffy and both very delicious.? Thumbs up from the cake eating ladies.

The waiting staff were attentive and friendly, but not intrusive and we were asked if we wanted a tea refill during our meal. We really needed it to help soak up all that cake!

After our leisurely meal we had an opportunity to have a look around the facilities.? The impressive Gold Room next to the Old Billiard room had been set up for a large tea party and the looked very grand.? We could envision a lovely wedding reception here as the doors all opened up to the outside terrace. Directly to the left of the building was a terraced area with outdoor seating which ran along the length of the building and would make the perfect space for a summer wedding reception or formal function.? The very private and enclosed grounds were lush with lots of mature trees and shrubbery and we even saw some rabbits exploring the lawns with us during our visit!

There were other rooms on the ground floor that are used for conferences and meetings.? We were particularly taken with the charming Library room with a delightful window snug area and walls decorated with rows of old books.

Up past the grand staircase were more smaller, modernly presented meeting rooms, all very well equipped and of varying sizes.

In summary, it was a lovely place to spend for a leisurely afternoon tea. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a somewhere special to take a friend or family member as a treat.? A great way to spend a few hours, I hope to return very soon.
