A brief tweet from the Peterborough Telegraph’s Brad Barnes suggests that the Giraffe chain of restaurants is set to open a restaurant at Serpentine Green.
Now part of the Tesco group, the restaurants sell a variety of dishes from across the world in a relaxed, funky atmosphere in a similar vibe to other new-world style restaurants like Las Iguanas and Chiquito.
Update – Confirmed by Giraffe on twitter, the new Peterborough restaurant is set to open on Saturday May 5th.
I’ve long been a fan of Giraffe and nagged the brand to consider opening a branch in Peterborough prior to their acquisition by Tesco. With the new Wisbech Tesco Extra hosting a Giraffe pop-up restaurant, it will be interesting to see if the new Peterborough branch is a full-time permanent restaurant or also a pop-up, and how the new Tesco+Giraffe restaurants compare with existing Giraffe branches.
How this new restaurant will affect the ailing food court at Serpentine Green remains to be seen. I’m going to “stick my neck out” (thanks Jack!) and suggest that with the opening of Costa opposite Tesco, footfall to the food court end has already decreased. If Giraffe opens within the food court then it would be a welcome boost to the other traders at the “forgotten end”, but we’ll have to wait and see.
And in case you were wondering, no they don’t sell giraffe!
