The best burger in Peterborough?

The humble burger has been a subject of discussion for some in Peterborough for a few years, namely due to a particular burger van in the city’s Cathedral Square. That got me thinking about where I would go for a real gourmet burger – one that isn’t served with a waxy napkin and is more likely to contain a slice of beef tomato than a mound of fried onions.

The demand for burgers in Peterborough is obvious to see – there are eight McDonalds restaurants in and around the city limits, plus numerous other chains and takeaways offering pretty much the same. Other towns and cities have attracted the likes of Gourmet Burger Kitchen or Ultimate Burger, so where can you go in Peterborough to get a better burger?

Great Northern Hotel – use it or lose it!

The Great Northern hotel in Peterborough – often the first sight visitors disembarking from the train see when they come through the station.  Now it seems the owners are struggling to get punters through the doors, suggesting that Peterborough residents should be using the hotel and it’s facilities more.

I’ve commented on an article in today’s Peterborough ET but their website loses all the formatting so I thought I would regurgitate it as a post on here.

Chiquito in Hampton, Peterborough

Update – Chiquito has now opened in Peterborough! Click here to read my review

Rumour has it that the Chiquitos chain of Mexican restaurants is looking to open a restaurant in Peterborough – in Hampton!

According to the report, Chiquitos along with another “The Restaurant Group” brand Frankie and Benny’s (there’s already one at Boongate and a Little Frankie’s in Westgate) will be moving into buildings on the Pavillion West development (?).

Does anyone know where that’s supposed to be?

Creating a buzz in The Bee Hive, Peterborough

Beehive pubSitting quietly on the edge of Peterborough town centre with Bourges Boulevard and the Asda carpark for company, the Beehive pub has always been a bit of an unknown quantity in Peterborough’s pub scene.  Admittedly I’ve never had up the courage or the desire to go inside, finding the location a bit inconvenient and never knowing if it’s still open for business.

I’ve not held back in the past with making my feelings known about Jim’s Bistro (read my review here), the French-esque restaurant on Broadway so hearing that owner James (Jim) Trevor is taking over the Bee hive has got my attention.  What are Jim’s plans for the Bee hive?

Chimichanga Peterborough is open!

I’ve heard it on good authority from Richard Kendall (@richardkendall) that Peterborough’s latest Mexican-themed restaurant is open for business!

This does mean however that Prezzo Group neglected to keep me informed… shame on their PR department!  Let’s hope the food and the Tequila is up to scratch.

I’ve already made my feelings known about what I think this restaurant opening means for Peterborough but now I get to try it and put theory into practice.

Chimichanga Mexican restaurant in Peterborough

Chimichanga Peterborough logoI walked past what was the Verve bar on Church Street and noticed that there’s now a “Chimichanga – We’re hiring” sign in the window, so I’m guessing it’s only a matter of weeks before Peterborough’s newest Mexican restaurant is open.  I reported on Chimichanga coming to Peterborough back in October so have been keeping an eye out for any new developments.

So Chimichanga is a chain restaurant and I can understand why many people loathe chains with a passion, but I think this is probably a good thing for Peterborough and if you’ll bear with me I’ll give you 5 reasons why…

Ask, Peterborough micro review

It’s hardly even worth calling this a review; I’m only blogging about Ask because it deserves more than a 140 character twitter and this was my first encounter with an Ask restaurant.

Ok, so Ask is a chain of Italian restaurants selling pizza and pasta.  More upmarket than a Pizza Hut and about the same as a Pizza Express, that much you (probably) know.

What makes my experience of Ask in Peterborough so worthy of a blog post is that the manager actually seemed interested in his customers experiences of the restaurant.  The service was personal but not to the extent of it being creepy and the restaurant building itself is fantastic, being in one of Peterborough’s oldest buildings.  Read More…

Review of Jim’s Bistro, Peterborough

Finally the much anticipated visit to Jim’s Bistro has happened and in a word, wow! I urge every restaurateur in the area to try out Jim’s and see where you’re going wrong.

As you enter the cosy (ok, small) restaurant you immediately become aware of the lively ambience this place has.  We were all shown to our table  (we’d booked in advance as there was a large group of us) by Kerry and were all soon ordering drinks and browsing the menu.  My only gripe at this point is that the specials menu is written on a mirror which was immediately behind me, making it difficult to read without standing up and walking a couple of feet away, which I did.  No bother really.
