When Freelancing is a bad move

I can’t really remember much of the month of May, well not in a work sense anyway.

This is where freelancing really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  Yes you’re your own boss and you can roll out of bed and be at your desk, but when you’re seriously ill you start to realise how dependent you are on putting the hours in otherwise bills don’t get paid.

Automotive Photography

As a web developer, I never claim to be at the forefront of cutting edge website design but I know what I like and what (I think) works.

When one of my projects needed some nifty automotive photography, I knew it had to be something a bit special. The first thing I did was head over to iStockphoto and stock.xchng to see if anything met the bill, which as per usual didn’t because I wasn’t looking for American cars or garish hatchbacks with spoilers on spoilers.

So with all my freeloading sources exhausted, I got in touch with an automotive photographer I’ve used in the past up in Glasgow and gave him the brief.

Freelance Switch Podcast

Freelancer resource website Freelance Switch has just launched it’s inaugural podcast service, bringing together some great minds to talk about the world of working for yourself, all slickly presented as you would expect.

Topics that are covered in the podcast include the importance of working contracts and how to approach clients that are a bit slow on paying for completed work.

The podcast is available from iTunes or can be heard directly from the Freelance Switch website.

New Look Scorpion Exhausts Direct website

The Scorpion Direct exhausts website has had a bit of a rejig.  The news page is now powered by the WordPress blog system and should be a great foundation for keeping the website up to date with the latest in performance exhaust news.

Scorpion Exhausts

Now fans of Scorpion Exhausts have no excuse for not keeping up to date on the latest stainless steel systems for their cars, news on what the Scorpion R&D dept is up to and just generally everything Scorpion!

Making the flickr badge your own

It was something I’ve been meaning to look into for a while – styling my flickr badge so it’s a bit prettier and w3c friendly.

In case you hadn’t heard, flickr offer a nifty feature called a flickr badge which allows you to include a selection of photos from your account on a web page.

Out of the box, the HTML badge code includes a naughty table so the first thing to do was strip that out and replace the table tag with a div. That worked and I left it for a few months until this morning when one of my clients asked for me to include a badge on his site.

I can allow quick and dirty hacks on my own site but when it’s someone’s business you want to push the boat out a bit don’t you? So now I’m left wondering what can and can’t be done with the code flickr churn out, a quick Google search returns a couple of interesting sites:

See my first tidy draft in action, there’s still room for improvement and next will be to replace the portfolio images with flickr versions.

Why the 9 to 5 Office Worker Will Become a Thing of the Past

The Natural Productivity Cycle

In your personal life, when attending to business or working on side projects, how often do you spend 8 consecutive hours in front of a computer? It doesn’t make sense because we lose the ability to concentrate effectively within a few hours.

Personally, I find myself most productive from mid-afternoon and often into the early hours of the morning. 8am-2pm is pretty much a low time for me.

Wikifest – Isle of Wight FAQ

I’ve been on the Isle of Wight festival forum for about a year now and this year is no different to last, hundreds of questions that have all be asked and answered before… so I thought I’d have a go at trying to bring some order to the chaos.

Wikifest, a basic wiki (powered by Wikki Wakka Wiki) with no customisation from me other than a 30 second “web 2.0″ logo :P

This is my first real foray into creating/editing wiki content (previously I’ve had a play with entries on wikipedia).
