Fox and Hounds, Longthorpe, Peterborough

The Fox and Hounds is a popular, lively pub in the area of Longthorpe in Peterborough, one of the old “townships” in the City and serves a fairly decent food menu along with usual drinks.

When I was recently sent a link to the Fox and Hounds website, I imagined the site to be a fairly traditional effort, giving the contact and location details of the pub, maybe a few sample menus and photos of the building or interior.  After all it’s a busy place so you’d expect them to have at least a basic site in place…

…how wrong I was!

Limon Cafe Peterborough Closes

According to tonight’s Evening Telegraph, the popular Limon cafe on Peterborough’s Bridge St has closed it’s doors due to a visit from the bailiffs over an unpaid Council Tax bill of £85,000!

The cafe has been nominated as one of the region’s Food Heroes on the UKTV Food campaign so it will be a shame to see it go – their breakfasts were always a treat, if a little pricey.

Celebrity Come Dine With Me – The verdict

As I predicted in my previous Celebrity Come Dine With Me post, there were some definite cringe moments, mainly due to Michelle Heaton’s lack of underwear – does this woman ever wear a bra?  But Peter Stringfellow’s collapsing kitchen sink was probably the highlight of the show.

From the off Linda Barker was out to impress and was in her element with an immaculately presented home. Anyone would think she does this for a living…  Her napkins were embroidered with “come dine with me”, which she described as a groovy idea.  Whatever you say love.

That aside the menu was relatively normal, no disasters but her dog biscuits turned out to be dog-shaped biscuits.  I was looking forward to “double creep” Lee thinking he was a bit posh because he was nomming a Bonio.

Celebrity Come Dine With Me 2008

The next best thing to cooking (and eating) great food as got to be watching it being cooked on TV and with hundreds of shows and dedicated TV channels, us foodies have never had it so good!

Narrated by the hilarious Dave Lamb, Channel 4′s Come Dine With Me series is one of those shows that quietly sits in the shadow of all the F-Word’s out there but after four series it’s a format to be reckoned with.  4 (or 5, depending on the series) strangers all take turns to cook a full blown meal for the other diners in the course of a week, with each host being scored based on their skills in the kitchen and at entertaining.  Needless to say, there’s always a lot of bickering going on which just adds to the appeal of the show.

Chilli, chili or chile?

I like spicy hot food.  I like it REALLY hot.  So much in fact that every year I take a trip out to one of the chilli festivals that are held across the UK and this weekend saw me do just that.

In previous years I’d taken the long journey from Cambridgeshire down to West Dean Gardens near Chichester, normally sitting in traffic for hours, so when I found there was another event being held just down the A1 in Stevenage I decided that would be where I was headed this year.

Benington was the venue, taking place in the gardens of Benington Lordship and whilst it wasn’t on the same scale as West Dean, it was enough to satisfy my hunger for the chile for a while.

The week that was

The first week of July’s been a little hectic and has seen the launch of the new Remus UK website for performance exhausts, the purchase of a new car (dapper Focus Zetec in a grey colour – probably called Sunset Blue or something by Ford’s fartarse design department) and the discovery of a new (well new to me) Indian takeaway in Peterborough.

Oh yes, curry is that important to me I feel I need to put it in writing! The establishment in question is the Donner & Balti Express, but don’t be put off by it’s dubious name, this is in fact an award winning curry house! Chef Mohammed Abdul Hakim has been awarded Peterborough Curry Chef of the year for three years in a row.

I’ve also discovered this week that Moo have finally added business cards to their already fantastic range of moo minicards, stickers, greetings cards and postcards.  Arriving in a pretty-much-standard 84x55mm, you get to choose from a couple of paper options and can upload images and designs to make the cards stand out. What makes Moo even more appealing is that you can have a number of different designs printed in the same batch, giving you an assortment of different cards!

If you’ve had your head in the sand for the past few years then you won’t have seen Moo cards before, almost like cigarette cards of old, these are often used by aspiring designer types as a cheap by eye catching business card alternative.  But now they’re an alternative no longer.

Who knows what delights next week will bring!!

Wiked Curry

Spotted on the wall outside my local curry takeaway was this witty retort to what looks like anti-meat protesting. I wonder why with a city, country and world where millions of people are happily munching away on pieces of lamb, beef, goat, whathaveyou, someone’s decided that this kebab and pizza shop is obviously a hardcore player in the world of meat.

I can appreciate some people choose to not eat meat, but why force your beliefs on others? It’s not as if the typical customer of this place is really going to give a damn… or be able to read.

Indian cuisine in general works quite well with veg and on my recent trip to Kerala ate mostly vegetable dishes (and the odd fish curry) with some wicked thali’s to be had.

It’s good to know I could quite happily do without meat as long as I could keep hold of my spice box!

Peterborough is unsafe at night

That’s if you believe what you read in local newspapers that is. To those thousands that travel into the city centre each weekend after hours, have a bite to eat and a bit to drink then maybe a dance and a kebab home, Peterborough is a pretty decent place.

Ok it’s no bustling metropolitan city like Manchester or Birmingham, but really who wants it to be? I personally don’t. Peterborough’s “that place” where people go to get their passport at the last minute. They didn’t know it existed before and they’ll probably forget again until they need another passport in 10 years time.
