Chimichanga Peterborough

I’ve heard that restaurant group Prezzo is looking to move into what is currently the Verve bar in Peterborough city centre and open a branch of their Tex-Mex chain Chimichanga.

Until a couple of years ago, Peterborough’s was pretty devoid of Mexican restaurants but then we saw the fantastic Coco restaurant and more recently Flamas in Hampton both of which are independently run and are making a great go of bringing Mexican and South American flavours to the city.

The Prezzo name is already a familiar one in Peterborough with an established Italian restaurant just doors down from where Chimichanga will be, so the group know their Peterborough clientele.

Flamas Peterborough – Review

Flamas restaurant

Flamas restaurant

Well that came around sooner than expected.  Only a few days after my original blog on the Flamás restaurant in Hampton I found myself sitting around a table in the restaurant with friends and a Caipirinha (or three).

In case you didn’t know, Flamás is tucked away deep within the Hampton Vale estate on Four Chimneys Crescent (it’s not as much of a building site as the out of date map suggests) and is easy to get to from either the Fletton Perkins parkway or London Road (A15).  If you can find your way to Tesco, you can get to Flamás.

So what’s good about Flamas?

Kathmandu Nepalese Restaurant, Peterborough

Previously known as Yeti’s, Kathmandu is in a prime location in the heart of Peterborough’s nightlife scene.   I’d not eaten here before, so when a fellow curry fiend suggested meeting in town we thought Kathmandu would be worth a try.

From the outside it’s hard to get excited about Kathmandu as the restaurant is above the neighbouring shops and lacks a street-level window where you can spy other diners.  Inside and up the stairs though, the dining area is well decorated with what looked like a few little areas on different levels – there’s even a table with cushions should you want to sit a bit closer to the floor! It was midweek so we were seated quickly and got down to the important part Read More…

Ask, Peterborough micro review

It’s hardly even worth calling this a review; I’m only blogging about Ask because it deserves more than a 140 character twitter and this was my first encounter with an Ask restaurant.

Ok, so Ask is a chain of Italian restaurants selling pizza and pasta.  More upmarket than a Pizza Hut and about the same as a Pizza Express, that much you (probably) know.

What makes my experience of Ask in Peterborough so worthy of a blog post is that the manager actually seemed interested in his customers experiences of the restaurant.  The service was personal but not to the extent of it being creepy and the restaurant building itself is fantastic, being in one of Peterborough’s oldest buildings.  Read More…

Review of Jim’s Bistro, Peterborough

Finally the much anticipated visit to Jim’s Bistro has happened and in a word, wow! I urge every restaurateur in the area to try out Jim’s and see where you’re going wrong.

As you enter the cosy (ok, small) restaurant you immediately become aware of the lively ambience this place has.  We were all shown to our table  (we’d booked in advance as there was a large group of us) by Kerry and were all soon ordering drinks and browsing the menu.  My only gripe at this point is that the specials menu is written on a mirror which was immediately behind me, making it difficult to read without standing up and walking a couple of feet away, which I did.  No bother really. Fresh food = better food

I’ve always believed there’s no such thing as bad food, only a bad diet.  So whilst it’s not a great idea to live on a diet of beige chicken nuggets, oven chips and god knows what else, in moderation it’s ok.  Then a friend recently asked me to look at a new website they’d seen called Phytolife which is all about educating the food consumer into how they can lead a healthier life by eating Phytonutrients (or superfoods to you and me).

Peterborough gets another KFC

KFC’s a funny one.  It’s always been in the shadow of the golden arches and on the High Street at least, is also overshadowed by Burger King but it’s on the retail parks that KFC earns it’s chicken wings.

Peterborough’s always lacked a serious KFC restaurant.  Ok so it’s had the London Road restaurant for as long as I can remember and it’s starting to show it’s age with a horrendous car park and poor location for most of Peterborough.
More recently we had the KFC built on the outskirts of a land refil site, so on a good day you get a lovely ripe smell of decomposing whatever filling your nostrils.  And that’s just from the restaurant kitchen… sorry, I had to get a joke in there somewhere – I actually don’t mind KFC restaurants and have even partaken in the odd mystery shopper experience there.

Oh, there’s also the Xtra services restaurant on the A1/A605 which has the misfortune of being on the site of one of the most depressing motorway service stations I’ve ever been too.
