Linksys CIT200 displays unregistered

I like Skype.  I just want to reach up to that big cloud-like logo and give it a big hug, even if it is owned by the evil that is eBay.

I like Skype not only for the free Skype-to-Skype voice communication but also the Instant Messenger (MSN clone) and the fact that my contact list is full of my work associates and clients just makes it feel more professional than other comms software I’ve tried.

Yesterday my Skype account got an early Christmas present with the addition of a Linksys CIT200 VoIP handset.  Other handsets are available, but they all seemed to be lacking in that phone “feel”.  They looked like phones but the weight and the plastic just wasn’t quite right.

Overall I’m very impressed with the CIT200.  The wired thing I had before was awkward to use and pretty hideous, not to mention the abysmal sound quality.  Whilst the CIT200 isn’t a full-fledged WiFi phone, I think it’s a fantastic alternative if you can live with having to go via a PC.

The CIT200 was pretty painless to set up, just install the drivers (off the CD or latest ones from the Linksys website), connect the USB base unit and charge up the phone.

When I say painless to set up, ok so I was pulling my hair out for a couple of hours trying to get the phone to pair with the base unit with all menu options giving the error “UNREGISTERED”.  As the phone was still charging I wasn’t in any rush but it turns out, I needed to put the base unit into some kind of “pairing seek” mode by holding down the (only) button on the base unit for about 5 seconds.  This then makes it blink blue whilst you go through the menu on the handset and register it (Menu > System > Register).

Other typical solutions I found (that didn’t work for me, but might for you) were to remove the batteries for a couple of minutes which should clear any memory, or just perform the typical drivers uninstall – reset – reinstall.

Try the official Linksys forums which might be of further help.

you must register to the base using this procedure:

    Register a handset
You can register your phone to up to 4 base units. Each base unit can register up to 4 handsets.
Your handset is registered to the base unit by default and is ready to use. You only have to register your handset
    if UNREGISTERED is displayed.
To register your handset when UNREGISTERED:
    1. Press REG.
    2. Press OK to select REGISTER.
    3. Press and hold the PAGE button on the base unit until the light flashes.
    4. Enter the PIN code. (Default 0000)
    5. Press OK. You will see a confirmation screen when registration is completed.
If registration is successful, the handset will display its name and number. The Base/Handset Link icon, which
indicates the link between your phone and the base unit, will display steadily with the battery icon. This state is
    referred as “standby”.
