Say “nr” to HP Sauce!
This was something I wanted to write about a while ago now but for some reason, never got round to it. In case you missed possibly the biggest news to rock the UK food industry since they stopped making Wispa bars (the first time around) in May 2006, Heinz announced that they were going to stop making HP brown sauce in the UK.
As soon as the Heinz purchase of the HP Foods company was a done deal, Heinz then proceeded to close the Birmingham factory and switch production to the Netherlands. That’s right, Britain’s number one brown sauce is now coming from Holland of all places!!
Now it may have been a case of cutting off my nose to spite my face but I decided there and then to stop buying HP-branded brown sauce. HP sauce is was a British icon, so to import it in is a joke in itself but the very name of the sauce itself implies a British heritage – HP stands for “Houses of Parliament” and the label still features said building.
Since I’m boycotting HP brown sauce, I’ve had to find an alternative and really the only one that comes close is Daddies. Heinz also make Daddies but since it’s not marketed as a British sauce, I’ve got no issues with adding a dose to my bacon sarnies on a Sunday morning. All Heinz would need to do is change the label on the HP bottle and I’ll be ditching Daddies in an instant.
So do the right thing and boycott HP!

I know what the smell of brown sauce over the Aston Expressway smelt like driving home. I have not bought HP since the closure of the plant…
Buy the new Branston “extra bite” Brown Sauce, it’s a new recipe made to be closer in taste to old HP sauce and it’s made in Britain, also it’s delicous.
