Petrol vs Diesel Prices
Thanks to my lack of motoring last month, I’ve been able to see the true difference a month has made on fuel prices in the UK.
Here in Peterborough I was paying 115.9p a litre at the end of April yet just 30-odd days later the price at the pumps is 130.9p! What the hell happened in the world whilst I was in hospital? I go away for a few days and the whole economy shuts down!
Similarly, the price of petrol has risen too from a paltry 106.9p to 115.9p/litre so why has diesel increased at a higher rate than petrol?
I find myself partially to blame…
…see, I drive a Fabia vRS. A diesel Skoda no less which had the exclusive title of being the only (warm) hatchback car with no petrol equivalent.
Sales of the Fabia vRS and indeed sporty diesels in general really shot through the roof over the past couple of years with many other manufacturers getting on board with similarly powered diesels. So all these extra oil burners on the road need fuel but does it really excuse the difference in price increases between diesel and petrol?
I’m starting to wonder if diesel has had it’s day, at least in the average road car. Petrol variants are becoming more and more efficient so coupled with the cheaper cost in fuel, probably make much more sense to all but those doing interstellar mileage.
How many others will be tempted back from the dark side to petrol power?
