Peterborough Pizza Express Review
February 3rd, 2008 Posted in curry monster, peterborough
Since I didn’t receive my invitation to the opening night of Peterborough’s newest premium pizza and pasta restaurant, I didn’t get the opportunity to rub shoulders with the restaurants President, Peter Boizot MBE. The only way I could shrug off that disappointment was to visit Pizza Express last Friday with mattysmash to sample the menu before heading into town for a few jars with some work colleagues.
It was quite early on a Friday night (6pm) but the restaurant was already quite busy with families so it was slightly noisier which was to be expected (parents - can you please teach your children to use their indoor voices when in Peterborough pizza restaurants?).
Once seated, service was prompt and painless. I’d already taken a sneaky glance at the menu from the Pizza Express website so knew I was going for the Etna from the Roman range. Matt went for the Pollo ad Astra Romana which he said was nice but I think he was sneakily wishing he’d chosen a Roman pizza too as it was dwarfed by mine.
The restaurant interior is really nicely styled with comfortable, heavy chairs and tables. I’m not sure if Pizza Express Peterborough has tables upstairs, but it’s hard to imagine this restaurant used to be a gaudy Burger King with a flight of stairs to the first floor - in it’s place is a great view of the kitchen area with the de rigueur assortment of Italian-themed food ornaments like jars of olives, peppers, etc.
Both pizzas arrived promptly within around 15-20 minutes of ordering which was perfect as we were in a rush to meet the others.
I’d not been into a Pizza Express restaurant for years so hadn’t tried the Etna before, but it’s definitely something I’ll be having again! If you like spicy food then you’ll love it - a peppery heat but full of other complimentary flavours. Plus being a Roman pizza it was bigger than normal which was a bonus (if you’re hungry/greedy/both).
We didn’t stay for any desert so just picked up the bill for the pizzas and a couple of bottles of Nastro Azzuro and off we went.
Overall, it was pretty much a perfect pizza-eating experience: prompt polite service, great food and it didn’t break the bank. What more could you ask for!
From this one visit, I think Pizza Express are definitely here to stay and will be shaking it up a bit for other restaurants!
Slightly better in my opinion than Prezzo’s just a few doors down and a lot better than some of the independent pizza restaurants in town (with the exception of the fantastic Fratelli’s which never fails to out stand).
