Getting closer to that iPhone
January 30th, 2008 Posted in meI posted the other week about giving the iPhone some consideration as my next handset and now it seems O2 are doing the damnedest to make that dream become a reality by making their tariffs more realistic.
Leading gadget website Gizmodo suggest that the change has come about due to the poor sales of the iPhone in the UK.
Now all new and existing iPhone customers on O2 (because some naughty people unlock theirs) will be able to get an iPhone on a £35/month tariff and get 600 minutes and 500 texts each month. For those on the other tariffs, minutes and texts increase accordingly.
So now there’s only two things stopping me from having some O2 store staff applaud me for making a purchase - the £270 handset cost and the lack of MMS support.
The £270 I can swallow at a push, but it’s not going to be a purchase I was planning to make. On an 18 month contract I’d expect to have the network provider falling over themselves to offer me their wares.
No MMS support is a bit of a bugger though when virtually every popular handset made in the last 5 years supports the sending and receiving of photos. Ok the iPhone can send the photo by email, but what happens when someone sends me an MMS? I’m sorry but in the UK (and probably Europe) the MMS is pretty essential and for Apple/O2 to not offer it is a big oversight in my opinion.
I’m still to demo my other option of the Nokia N95 8GB but either way it looks like I’ll be switching to O2 in the near future.
